Default Maintenance

based upon reactions to a post I made in another thread:

I'm starting this thread to inform folks and hopefully for me to learn from their responses about:

5. the numbers of folks who don't recognize the need to do basic maintenance (as simple as checking roof caulking) is troubling

for the most part, normal maintenance of a camper doesn't high tech and doesn't really require high level training ..... most companies recommend that roof caulking as well as all other camper seals and caulk be checked once a year, I recommend twice .... basically in the spring and again in the fall, I get up on top of the camper (and I really don't care for heights) and look over all caulked seams .... I try to pay close attention to see if any of the caulk seems to have settled leaving a very thin seal .... if so (with our rubber roof) I wipe the seam with a damp cloth and apply another bead of Dicore (don't use silicone) .... for those who use Dicore, it is best not to stock up on it because it does have a shelf life .... for folks with non rubber roofs, you really need to check your literature to see what sealer to use .... every time you walk by, check the caulking on all lights .... one should immediately fill any cracks in the seals on top of or down the sides of lights with the appropriate caulk ... under every outside light is a hole drilled through the camper's wall .... water damage caused by folks not keeping up with such maintenance isn't covered under any warranty that I have ever seen .... tire pressure should be checked often, most certainly prior to a trip of any significant length .... yearly brake and bearing checks should not be skipped .... lastly, visual inspections should take place ever time one is around their camper .... look of leaks and/or anything that simply doesn't look right
