Default Battery Maintenance

We've had out Brookside 310 FWMS for slightly over a year and I have only looked at the water in the factory supplied battery once...and that was when I was installing a second battery in the tiny battery compartment. I realize that the battery compartment does not need to be huge, just big enough to accomodate a battery or two. Installing the second battery was a little nerve racking (i.e., sparks) due to the compactness of the compartment but I got both batteries "in", wired in parallel, with connections satisfactorily tightened. That second battery install was about 6 months ago, so the ages on our batteries are thus: original 1 year, second 6 months. Since that second install I haven't unlocked the battery compartment, let alone checked any water levels etc. Fast forward to this past Saturday morning (5/10/08) and Friday the day before. I have a friend at work who is a dedicated golfer and he just recently purchased a used golf cart which has a "auto" watering system in it. Once I heard about this "auto" thing, I started thinking about my 2 batteries and my lack of care for them. I checked out CW web site and sure enough, there was the Flow Rite Remote Battery Fill System (cat# 27037). For what I could see on the CW web site the whole thing looked at little over priced for what you were getting, but compared to battery failure out in the middle of unknown area, the price suddenly seemed very reasonable. Rather than order and pay shipping, I zipped down to my nearest CW after work Friday and picked up the system. Are you burned out yet from this long story......anyway, Saturday morning, bright and early before the 90+ degree temps set in, my dear wife and I went down to the camper storage area to install the watering system. Though advertised as "no tools required" I did need a flat tip screw driver to pry off the existing battery caps. We were unable to do the install with the batteries in the tiny compartment so rather than risk sparks and possible over filling and who knows what all else, we removed the two batteries from their tiny home. This is itself is nerve racking because of the tiny compartment and the need for a pair of pliers to loosen the terminal wing nuts. Very long (so far) story shortened.....we followed the clear instructions, had all the materials (parts) that we needed (using the A kit), got everything hooked up, batteries back into their home and filled them up.....we put over 1/2 gallon of destilled water into those two batteries. The "system" remains installed on the batteries and future filling is a piece of cake, not battery removel, no sparks, no sweat. I hardily recommend this system to anyone who has a unit that does not allow easy access to their batteries for refills......all of the system fits easily into the same tiny battery compartment for storage (except the gallon of distilled water) and I'm pretty confident that we just saved the lives of our two batteries. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.....Tom Makin
