Looking to avoid electical surge damage?
I keep my trailer hooked up to a 30 amp service 12 months a year. Last fall during a bad storm there was a lightning strike near the trailer. The surge fried the converter and the GFI outlet. We have not used the trailer after the repair so there may be more damage I have not discovered yet. The trialer is parked next to my barn that has lightning rods. The power cord from the trailer was connected to an extension cord that was pluged into the 30 amp service. My theory is that the strike may have hit the barn lighting rod, then traveled via the grounding rod into the earth. The power cord laying on the ground must have picked up the surge and entered the trailer. The connection between the power cord and the extention was fried. I am thinking about not keeping the trailer connected to power to prevent a future surge. What are the pros and cons of keeping the trailer un-pluged.
