Default Microwave/Convection Oven

We used the convection setting on our combo oven for the first time on our maiden outing. While the oven was heating our dinner I happened to open the storage compartment above it. I found that the food items stored there were very warm and the bottom of the compartment was almost too hot to touch.

After returning home I removed the oven to discover that there was no insulation at all to protect the cabinet above from oven heat. Does this sound like a problem to anyone? I didn't see any scorch marks on the underside of the shelf or blistering on the inside above.

My thought is to insulate the space above the oven and add a metal heat barrier to protect the insulation. Suggestions please!
