Default Water heater question

I finally got to look at my heater as it has been somewhat finiky about starting. At times it will light on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd attempt. I blew out all the passages with the tubes and all. Then I read the book and saw that my igniter has a gap way bigger then their 1/8" spec. I fixed that. Adjusted and all seems fine, except.... the negative pole of the igniter ok to gets glowing hot at the tip.
I did not look to see how this was before taking it apart. I notice now that the last small section of the igiter negative pole seems to get red hot. Cant seem to figure out how not to make this happen. Book says nothing. Just curious.

Thanks
