The D4 is the old model, and the J1 is the upgraded one.
The J1 has an SD Card, and automatically upgrades to the card, but you manually allow it to go into your software.

I really didn't know this, but looked it up.

While checking it out, also check the costs....I have heard pretty high $$, but if you HAVE to be connected, this is the one sure way to do it, altho it too cannot see thru trees.

My neighbor, a retired wildlife ecology professor at Colorado State University still works with PHD students and travels a lot. He has a satellite dish on his Class C motorhome and uses that to keep track of the projects his students are working on. I don't know what brand or provider he uses, but it works well for his needs.

info appreciated .... we have no plan to do anything but stay with Direct .... I'd heard they manufacture the equipment but not that they have their own internet/TV programs

My late BIL had some kind on a motorhome, all he did was tell it which way was north.
It would work back, and forth until it found all the Birds up there.
He never did have to aim it.

Yes this has been years ago in So.Cal.
He also had the 8' dish in the backyard at home.
He was into all that stuff.
                Really hated to lose him.

about a year ago we had to have a new roof mounted dome dish installed on our camper .... the mobile tech (who sells and installs all major brands) recommended a Winegard G2, the one he installed can be seen in the first picture .... in the second picture you can see the size of the dish ....it replaced the Winegard Move'n View dome dish (third picture) that was installed back in early 2006 .... they now have a model G2+ so ours is already a bit out of date .... operationally, the biggest difference is the Move'n View we had to turn it on, program in our zip code and after it locked onto a signal we had to turn the power switch off .... with the new one, she turns on the power and walks away ... hours/days/weeks/months later we we get ready to move the camper, she turns off the power switch
