the 2018 season is barely underway and major story in 2019 is unfolding .... the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champions No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team with driver Jimmie Johnson will have a new primary sponsor beginning next season .... anyone care to guess who that new sponsor will be

Can't say that its all that much of a surprise. The hood on the 48 HAS to be some of the most expensive real estate in NASCAR. Given that you already hear people in the sport saying "What else does Jimmie have to prove.. beyond an 8th championship?" My bet is someone at Lowe's read the tea leaves correctly. Signing a new agreement would probably require a multi-year commitment. I'm not sure Jimmie has "multi-years" left in him given his rank in the sport. Add to that the struggles of late... and it's easy to forecast that the highest points of Jimmie's career are behind him.

I believe when all is said and done, Lowe's made the right call. They'll be back in the sport... give 'em a couple years...
They'll be back w/ a young driver getting nearly the same media exposure at a far lower cost.

UPDATE 8-29-2018: With the GMS talks having apparently collapsed, sources said that another possible option for Truex that has now opened up is for him to go to Joe Gibbs Racing. That possibility could see Truex move into JGR's No. 19 Toyota, while JGR could send rising Mexican star Daniel Suarez to Leavine Family Racing's No. 95 Toyota. FRR, JGR and LFR had no comment on that possibility.

I could see this. The money that JGR commands from sponsors demands a more consistent performance than what Suarez has delivered. He's good.. but he's not top tier good.

Richard Childress Racing stayed in-house to fill the vacancy on its No. 31 Chevrolet in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, tabbing Daniel Hemric to man the seat beginning in 2019

I sure didn't see that move coming ...

Chad Knaus will serve as crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet for driver William Byron in 2019, a move that will end the longest current driver-crew chief pairing in the NASCAR garage with Knaus and Jimmie Johnson.

Hendrick Motorsports announced the news Wednesday as part of a reshuffling of crew chiefs for two of its four teams in the Monster Energy Series. Johnson will be paired with Kevin Meendering, currently a crew chief for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, on the No. 48 Chevrolet operation next year.

another change for 2019 that I hadn't heard was even being discussed

NASCAR drivers will no longer be able to make in-race trackbar adjustments from their cars in 2019.

The news emerged from a Monday morning appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio by Scott Miller, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition. Miller said that drivers had pushed for the change.
