  • Who Knew ???

In Navajo “kemosabe” translates to “soggy shrub.” If this seems an odd thing for faithful friend Tonto to call the Lone Ranger, perhaps he was just repaying the Ranger's long-standing insult. “Tonto,” after all, is a Spanish word meaning “stupid.”

We were just discussing the origin of loads of words we use. Luigi was one that no one knew how it came to be? Sounds Italian.

Clarification on the "kemosabe" thing.... Lone Ranger was a Texas Ranger whose whole company was massacred by whites posing as Indians. He was found in a canyon after being left for dead by Tonto and Tonto brought him back to the village and nursed him back to life. Hence Tonto was very likely NOT Navajo but more likely Comanche or Apache or one of the less tribes of Texas. Tonto in Spanish means stupid or silly, btw.

Always amazed at what kind of research can be found on the net. Here's a link to Slate.com where research was done at some point on this very item. No definite conclusion was reached but it makes of interesting reading: https://slate.com/culture/2013/06/ke...ne-ranger.html
