when you are in unfamiliar territory and your GPS takes you a route you don't like, DON'T FORGET IT .... last year when we left Fenton, Mo on our way to Nashville, Tn our GPS took us over a route that included miles and miles of 2 lane road .... when we travel I like to stay on interstate highways and made a note to myself to not go that way again .... today I forgot to read the note and before I knew it, we were too far along to change the route .... :wall:

    Check it! Phone Apps??

I've learned to map check routes that our TomTom sends us on. I would say that I've had luck with 50% of them but the other 50% I used maps because I knew in my gut that the GPS was out to lunch!
I don't know the success of Phone Apps since I don't have a "Smart Phone", never tried purchasing one. I do see one in our future because the kids are pressuring me to upgrade to one for when we travel. I would really have to be reassured that the App was safe using. Wondered if anyone uses phone apps while traveling???

      50% is an F.

Toss the TomTom and get a Garmin or Rand McNally.

My Rand McNally RVND 7710 is not perfect. Probably 90+%. My previous Garmin was about the same

      I could not tolerate 50%.

I had a TomTom once. I gave it away and bought a Garmin.

TomTom is European and uses different mapping, that is inferior.

one thing that surprised me was when I keyed it into Google Maps, it gave the route I would have liked to have taken as its first choice and the way Garmin took us was Google Maps third choice ..

We have a Magglan portable, The Truck and the Car both have Chrysler Nav system I have run both of the systems at the same time, it is cool that they match route for route most of the time. But when they don't it gets interesting. Of course there is the Janet package, and she is never wrong:sack:

                    Google Maps

I consistantly have good luck with Google Maps, the routes always seem to be the exact way I would like to go, good highway, shortest, quickest - couldn't ask for much more. Plus I'm able to do a satellite view so I can get into my mind what the area will look like when I get to the area.
Wish we could put google on a GPS and then modify it for RV's, I'd buy that sucker.

My wife's Garmin wanted us to cross the river and drive through Memphis on the way to South Texas. It tried to do that last year and I fell victim to the audible directions without thinking about it. This year we were ready for it and as it was recalculating I watched the estimated time of arrival drop an hour when it choose the route we wanted. I should have paid attention to it when it said "Traffic ahead, recalculating" though, as we encountered a parking lot on the hwy about an hour away from Little Rock. Sat there and moved 1/10 of a mile in 45 minutes, until we figured out there were 4 semi drivers playing stupid traffic throttling games. A$$hats were just parked blocking all traffic, while the road ahead was clear of all vehicles for 3 miles before the lanes merged.

Frank do you have the XM antenna for the traffic watch?

Don't those truckers know its agin' the law to block traffic?
