  • Water Heater Issues

I have been trying for the last 2 days to get hot water in our unit.

Upon getting ready to get the tools out and start checking I found what caused the issue.

"Note to Self" When de-winterizing remember to undo the by-pass system on the water heater if you want hot water and no burned out element. Must be getting older as that one went right by me. The cost will be a new element, that has been ordered, and the time to put it in. That involves draining the water heater, turning off the electric and making room so I can work on the backside of the heater.

Dumb, I know but I am admitting my goof in hopes it won't happen next year. Was wondering why I didn't hear the hissing I normally hear when I turn on the water heater. I have a bypass system installed in my trailer.

Will run the heater on gas until I get situated in Florida in about a week.

I can assure you that you aren't alone .... you might be surprised at the number of folks who bring their campers in for water heater issues who have done just that .... also, the number who open the water inlet valve but overlook closing the bypass

Our local Ace Hardware carries elements for RV type water heaters.

Man if I had a nickel for every time that I've done that...

Well... I wouldn't have any money... :stickpoke:

        Sorry David... Couldn't resist.

I purchased a w/h element at Lowes. The oe unit was 1440 watts. I replaced with a 1500 watt. The service department at Tom Johnson Camping Center burned mine up .

I ordered a 1500 watt one and will be installing it when I get to my final snowbird location.

This will be the second one in 9 years with the first one having been done by a dealers service department. They denied doing it. They would not let me speak to the person who worked on the camper. Cheaper for me to just replace it and move on.

Also glad I don't seem to be the only one that has had this brain fart. I was WAY to easy to forget and I will have a note in the circuit breaker area so it will not happen again. I felt stupid to find out that I had let that happen.

                      Temps sound Great!

The temps sound great to me, hopefully we leave in about 4 weeks from now, we have a site reserved in south western Arcadia for 2 months, then we move to Sarasota for a month. Hopefully by the beginning of May it will be sunny and warming up at home.
My hope is that I can get out of here without any snow and ice on the roof of the FW. Unfortunately it sits on the north side of the garage, helps with the summer sun but this time of year I would like the sun to be on the roof. I might pull it forward. It will mean I have more clearing to do if it snows due to the direction I need to hitch up.

Good luck on getting enough sun (heat) to do the trick for you. We dealt with cold weather for the first 3 stops of our trip. The nightime lows were right around freezing. Our last night in Skidaway Island State Park I diconnected the water hose as temps were to get below freezing and we were leaving in the morning. Nothing like a frozen water hose when you have to get on the road early hence the disconnection. Had to pump out the black tank and the sewer hose didn't want to strretch at all. I tried talking the wife into letting the sewer hose stay in the doorway of the trailer overnight. Nothing doing. Now theres a surpise. Truth be know I didn't want it in the trailer either, capped or not.

We ended up staying in 3 Wal-Marts on the way down. Each had quite a few campers. The least we saw was 5 and the most around 10. It sure is nice not to have to run far to get settled for the night. We did find stuff to buy at all 3 Wal-Marts the least being some tank anti-freeze stuff. Tried the windshield washer stuff, which was mentioned here, in the black tank and went for RV antifreeze for the other 2 tanks as the lower protection for the windshield fluid was 0 degrees and the RV stuff was -50. I figured even with diluting I was better off spending the $1 a bottle more for the RV stuff.

I have had more issues with this trip then I have ever had traveling with any camper. I will detail what happened after I get to my final spot in Homestead Florida and have a discussion with BcJim as I would like for him to take a look at things first. Suffice it to say this was a expensive trip and I'm not there yet
