today was the day .... the Henry caught our grandson completely by surprise .. .. after opening his gift we drove over to a friends range where we sighted in the scope and fired 50 some light 38 spl level loads in 357 casings .... we also fired a dozen or so full power 357 rounds .... both grouped well but at 25 yards we found a considerable difference in where they grouped on on a target .... I was pleased with our grandson's progress in handling his rife as well as shooting it .... the pictures below pretty well tell the story .... as noted, he was firing at 25 yards

update
we took advantage of a beautiful day in the neighborhood to spend about 5 hours at a friend's shooting range with our 8 year old grandson and his Henry 357 .... during that time Jacob fired about 75 rounds of a target load that we wanted to test in his Henry .... Missouri Bullet Company 158 Grain SWC - Grooveless Missouri Bullet Company, pushed by 6.5 gr Bullseye, ignited by a standard small pistol primer .... the bottom line is, as can be seen below, its a keeper .... Jacob hit the bottle cap off of a plastic Gatorade bottle at 25 yards .... he went on to routinely bust skeet at 50 yards .... yep, a good day in the neighborhood ..Jim

I really believe that one major key for him is I've never allowed him to fire a rifle that would kick him .... consequently, he doesn't flinch, blink, or make any of the other movements most of us make when firing rifles, shotguns, or pistols that we know are going to punch us .... it may well be a few years down the line before we move him to a larger caliber rifleJim

Note to self :
Self :
next time Jacob is helping clean a rifle, make sure to tell him that when he wipes it down with a Ballistol soaked rag, he should not wipe the scope lenses ..ops:

with winter and with us spending over 2 months in Texas, its been a while since I had an opportunity to take our grandson back out on the range .... he's on spring break this week and today was our day to get back out there .... we decided to take his father's 10-22 and his BBS 357 .... we didn't take any paper targets, rather a collection of empty milk jugs and an assortment of other empty bottles which he took back home to show his mother .... one of my goals for today was to introduce him to off hand shooting .... considering that the stocks of both are a bit long for him and both are pretty heavy for him, he did well .... I didn't keep count but I'd guess he fired a couple of hundred 22 LR's and well over 50 357's .... all in all, it was a really good day

its been a great day .... spending a day on the range with our 9 (soon to be 10) year old grandson most certainly has made it a great day .... having made his own target (thanks Jeff for the idea), we took it to one of our son's range .... the pictures show the target (on the right) at 25 yards, then back to 100 yards .... on the left is a metal torso silhouette .... he consistently rang the gong on the silhouette at 100 yards with both his 22 Ruger 10-22 and his Henry 357 .... the 4 power Nikon on the Ruger is dead on .... the 3 X 9 Nikon on the 357 needs some fine tuning .... he will be spending most this week with us and we hope to get back out there soon
