  • Fueling Recommendations

The purpose of this thread is to provide folks with information on good places to buy fuel when traveling through areas we aren’t familiar with. If you know of any good or bad locations please post your comments. The types of info that might be helpful is exact location, big rig friendly ? , pumps available on both sides of vehicle ? , high speed pumps ? , open 24 hours ? , other services available ?

not exactly true. Wal-Mart buys gas from a lot of different jobbers/distributors and has no idea where it comes from. Hess' main facility is in U.S. Virgin Islands and does in fact get oil from middle east and Venezuela. BP has refineries on the gulf coast, and most of them get Saudi oil. Hess formed a partnership called Pedevesa (sp) with Venezeula to process the Orinoco Crude at San Juan. Had to mix it with condensate to be able to flow. Unloaded condensate and pumped to the basin, then carried mixed crude to San Juan, took out the condensate and sent it back.

Not sure about the distributors/sellers you name, but few of them actually process the oil to gasoline and diesel. Pipelines crisscross the US and different refiners are hooked up to different ones. Perhaps in theory, refiner X does not receive oil from Y, but as long as it meets specification, the refiner takes it and process it. In a perfect world, it is all separated, but in reality, who really knows.
Until Unocal was put out of business by California due to onerous regulations and taxes, most of their oil came from the seven sisters on the North Slope of Alaska via Valdez. Then the fool got drunk and ran aground and really got California upset. Unocal was sold at bargain basement prices to an entitled company who promptly cut pay and benefits to all the employees. Boy, I am glad I refused to transfer there back when.

Speedway and Murphy (Walmart) in Sturgis, Michigan gas is $3.389 and diesel is 3.959. A gas war going on in the town. Unfortunately neither are easy to get into and out of with an RV. It can be done, but not easily.
