  • Joliet, Il -- Empress Casino RV Park

We spent one night here on our trip from Des Moines to Indiana. It is okay for an overnight stop but not much else. The sites are part concrete, part just compacted dirt. 50 amp electric and water only. No sewer but they do have an oddly placed dump station that we did not use. I believe it was $33 per night which I thought was high for what you get.

Interestingly enough, when I took the trash to the dumpster just prior to leaving yesterday, there were two raccoons inside having a snack. Never seen that before.

I agree with your review. That campground is good for three things:
    1. Gets you close to the gambling action
    2. Is one of the few CG's in the Chicago area (what a shame)
    3. Is close to the I & M Canal which has a nice bicycle trail; if you are into that sort of thing.

        Chicagao area

After living in the Chicago area my whole life I have determined that it is a good place to be "from". It is definitely not an RV friendly place.

I know it's not the "Chicago area" but on our way home, on I-80, from our trip out west late this summer, we stopped in Geneseo, IL at the Geneseo Campground. This is really a nice, quite, treed, well kept $25.00/night full hook-ups campground. Geneseo is really a nice small town, well kept up.

Also, in the "Chicago area", we do camp at the Paul Wolff Campground in the Kane County Burnidge Forest Preserve. it is located just off of Randall Road on Big Timber. We have daughters that live in St. Charles and this is a very convenient campground when we are visiting them. It has Electricity and Water (well water, make sure you use a filter) at the sites. A dump station on the way out.

Okay, it is now one year later, and we are back for one night at Empress. I can report that NOTHING has changed......no improvements made at all, in fact, I think it has gone downhill a bit. There are about 10 sites that are not available due to huge cargo boxes in those sites. The price is still the same, $33 including tax.

Upon arriving, we got a bit of a scare. Debbie went inside and tried to put out the big slides......neither moved, no noise, no grinding, nothing. The bedroom slide operated properly. On a hunch, I went and checked the slideout master switch that is hidden away in the basement. Sure enough, it had been switched off. I don't know how that happened, but switching it back on, the slides went out properly.

            Life is good!

Here are a couple of picts of our site.

A nearby alternative to the casino is, Leisure Lake CG.located in the SW corner of I 80 and I 55. Visit their website for information. This is a member only CG, which accepts Good Sam, PPA, Escapees, as guests. No reservation accepted. I paid $35/night with my GS card. I recommend it over any other RV park in the Chicago area.
