There is a great state just over the line in Indiana, it's called Dunes State Park. It is right on Lake Michigan about 35 mi from Chicago, you can catch the South Shore commuter train just out side of the park and take it in and not have to drive in. The park is just off of I-80-94. We live about 75 mi so e of there.. It is located in Chesterton In. Very nice park w/paved sites. Hope this helps. Sawdust Maker

      Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, Portage, IN

I can tell you where not to stay:
      Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, Portage, IN

We were going to stay there a few years ago to base camp while we explored Chicago.

We felt so unsafe, we left after one night.

Maybe it's changed, but I won't try that campground again.

There are two state parks north of Chicago. Both would require a bit of a drive to get to the downtown portion of the city, but both are quite nice and safe.

DNR I would prefer this one as it is right on Lake Michigan and about a 45 minute drive to downtown.

DNR This one is also nice, but a bit longer drive to downtown.

We have a daughter that lives in St. Charles, IL. When we go over to see her and family with the camper we stay at the Paul Wolff Campground. It is a Kane County Forest Preserve Campground. Water and 50 amp power available at all 89 sites. They have a dump station. Non-resident fees are $25.00/night.

Here is a link to their web site: Forest Preserve Property

It is about a mile south of the Northwest Tollway (I-90), so easy access to the city.
