We are at Aune Osborn Campground near the Soo Locks. The campground itself is nothing spectacular, average sites in a field beside the St Mary's River, but like real estate, location is everything. The ships going past our rear windows are HUGE. Sorry for the poor pictures but it is lightly raining, about 50 degrees out side and windy...I took the photos thru the window.

We also enjoyed our stay. Spend a couple hours at Soo Locks Visitor Center was worth visit describing the history, construction, and operation of the Soo Locks with an elevated viewing area to watch the freighters pass through the locks. Ships were coming through every couple of hours, and the process of raising and lowering the locks is fascinating. The museum answered all of our questions about how the locks work and why different ships go through different locks.

      Very cool!

We had a similar experience at Robert Moses SP in NY, though not quite as close as that.

That's like camping at Tom Sawyer RV Park in West Memphis (2014 for us). Sites are on the banks of the Mississippi and you can watch barges go by all day long. When we were hooking up a barge was going by and Millie ran over to get a picture of it. When she got back I asked her what the hurry was and she said she wanted a picture before it got away. Over the next three days I don't know how many went by but it wasn't unusual to have 3 in sight at once. Very nice campground, clean, and the washer dryers were free. We needed that. Several years earlier when the Mississippi flooded those sites were abt 20' underwater. The office and most of the buildings are on wheels so they can "Get out of Dodge" when the rivers rising.
