We left the Glacier area on the morning of Aug. 19 to travel to Missoula, MT. The west side of Glacier is a massive Flathead indian reservation. As you travel south through Kalispel, we came to Flathead Lake. It is a HUGE alpine type lake. Think Lake Tahoe in the California Sierra Mountians. They are very similar. We finally got around the lake and made it further south to Missoula. We stayed at Jim & Mary's Campground there. It is a great little campground. Good power, water, sewer, wifi works well, Verizon aircard works well also. We spent two nights here.

There are a few things to see here. We did two of them. They have a lunch on the square downtown on summer Wednesdays. We partook of it. Area restaurants bring small food prep trailers to the square and sell mini meals at a reduced price of what they serve in their restaurants. There is also live music going on at the same time. It is a cool experience. We met and ate with another fulltimer couple from San Diego. There is an old time carousel that has been restored and you can buy a ride on it for a couple of dollars. Debbie partook of that.

After doing the lunch thing, we headed to the airport and toured the Missoula Smokejumper Center. This was amazing! We loved it. Hearing about their experiences and what they have to go through to get their job and keep it sounded like what the Navy Seals have to go through. One of the things that stuck in my mind was that they have to be able to carry an extra 110 lbs over a 4 mile course in 90 minutes. I've included pictures of the site.

We left Missoula and headed to Dillon, MT for two nights. There is nothing in Dillon, but around there are a couple of great historical sights. We toured Virginia City, MT. It is an old west town that is kept as it was in the 1880's. There evidently was a good deal of thievery going on in this area because there are informational signs in town that explain about vigilanteism that went on. One of the stores has an exposed ceiling beam on which 5 highway men were hung together for stealing. You could still see the rope burns/creases in the wood.

Next on the trip is a 10 day stay at Thayne, WY.
