    Fort Stevenson State Park

We spent a couple days at the Fort Stevenson State Park. It is located near Garrison, ND on the shore of Lake Sakakawea, which is formed by a huge earthen dam across the Missouri river.

At this time of year there are not many campers here, and we didn't see a ranger either. The camping fees are exchanged on the honor system, by filling out your info on an envelope and placing it an envelope with your payment in a drop box.

Fees for full hookup, in one of the largest campsites we have ever seen, were $25 per day.

The park and campground are well kept and full of wildlife. We saw deer and prairie dogs and many different birds each day. Fishing on Lake Sakakawea is better from boats, but shore fishing is available.

The annual week long North Dakota Bicycle Ride, CANDISC (Cycling Around North Dakota in Sakakawea Country), departs from, and returns to this park each August.

Recommend this park to anyone passing through this part of the world.

The empty pull through site in the photo is designated for the camp host. They were gone for the season, apparently. This site is representative of the size of all of the full hookup sites.
