  • Skiatook, OK

Has anyone camped at the fairly new campground, Stoney Ridge Campground, near Skiatook, OK?

We are thinking about it, although it's small. The price is right ($120 wk for full hook-up). Ideally, we would have chosen Tall Chief CG (water/electric only for more money - although it's supposed to be a really nice campground)on the big lake. However, Dan needs to be closer to Skiatook for two days of the week.

Maybe we'll be the first here...

We have been there about 4-5 times for 3-4 nights each time. It is just a place to park. Not saying it's bad by any means. The couple that have are nice and very friendly, but the park is just a place to stay. The laundry and restrooms are OK. Mostly permanent folks there. And unless they have remodeled something it is all old stuff, but does have full hookups.

The turn off the highway is rough,, and very steep down hill. You drop about 50' down. Going in not to bad,, but be very careful coming out and getting on the highway and on a little bit of a curve.

I try to take my wife (Bette) to have some classes with Jerry Yarnell School of Art each year and this is the closest place to stay. I talked with Donna, (Jerry's wife) a while back about the casino... they are supposed to put an RV park in, but have not as of now.

Like I said,,, it's a place to stay and we have never had any problems.

Dan is going to one of the open classes at Yarnell's studio. It's the reason we're making this stop.

The RV park is not ready at the casino yet.

        Thanks for your input.

When are you guys going to be there. We want to come, but have a couple of things to work out yet.

Bette went to Jerry's workshops (expensive) in Corpus Christi starting in 98 or so and then we found out about the open class at the studio after we got an RV and been going up there for about 6 years now. If you have never been to one of Jerry's classes,, he is a great teacher and a great person.

Dan's classes are the 16th & 17th of September. We pull in on the 15th, and will depart the following Tuesday.

We think we might go ahead and camp at the Tall Chief CG, even though the drive will be longer. The price is still good, even though there aren't sewer hook-ups. We are going to talk about it today, and then we'll decide.

I hope I didn't scare you off.. but it is just a camp ground. I have never felt unsafe there. If you haven't looked, you can see a good picture of it on Google maps, earth view.

                Skiatook Stay

We did go look at the pictures/street view. The drive doesn't look that bad, but the campground looks pretty crowded. If we were only staying the few days surrounding Dan's class, we would probably stay there. But we're going to be around for an entire week, and we would like to have more room to wander, and to walk the dogs.

With that said - If Bette can get registered for the classes (open classes - 16-17 Sept), maybe we can all do dinner one night --- if they're not too tired. I've heard that the classes are draining.

                  Tall Chief Cove Campground

We camped for a week just outside of town on the lake. There are no sewer hookups, but everything else is available. Some of the sites are short, and some are less than level, either tilted toward the back or front. However, there are some nice level sites, and they are making improvements to the campground all the time, according to one local camper. It is apparently a fisherman's haven. We watched the parade of boats going out early every morning, and return just before sunset.

Our site (#17) was close to the lake, but we did have the No Wake sign just out the back of our rig.

The roads are a bit narrow and curvy, but most of the sites are at an angle, so it's not hard to get in.

Some of the water hook-ups are quite a way from the site, and some are right on the site.

My advice is to call and speak to the camp host when you are looking at staying at this campground. He was very helpful when I called. He knows which are shaded vs sunny sites, and which are more suitable for large rigs.

The bathroom up on our loop is older, and someone left the door open overnight. It was inundated with little flying bugs on the morning we left. Other than that, it was okay to use the bathroom. You can see that they do their best to keep it clean, but I would go for the extra little bit of a walk and use the new one up on the hill.

The site that looks like a Y is a Buddy Site.

There is a pretty cool playground over by the shelter and last loop.

You can see the second loop in the background of the last picture. There were several large rigs over there, but the loop is small.

I didn't have my camera with me the day I walked over by the playground. However, I did see a very large motorhome camped down on the last loop.

With the Senior Pass, it's $10 night...

We only drove into Tulsa one day (about 45-50 minutes to our destination). We wouldn't make that kind of drive every day.

If we ever want/need to camp here again, we will.

Dan hadn't done any painting in a couple of years, so this gave him a kick start to get going again. He didn't do a painting, but spent the two days working on techniques, things that he's been wanting to learn. He was completely exhausted both days when he got home.

He'll never be famous, and he'll never make any money from it. He just does it because he enjoys it.

I saw a picture of Dan on Jerry's site... he was painting rocks.

Bette loves to paint and I must brag a little,, she is very good. She has sold a few, but not enough to even think about paying for materials or lessons. But that is OK, she enjoys painting.

We don't use Facebook, but I found it, thinking it might be there since there didn't seem to be any place on his regular site. I was surprised that I could actually get to the picture since we don't have an account. Thanks so much for letting us know. I wanted a picture of Dan painting there, but figured there wouldn't be time for someone to snap one for me.
