on our current trip we've been experimenting with using block ice in our Yeti cooler .... the results have been interesting .... for the most part of the the two weeks we spent in St Louis, the day temps were in the 90's and at night it only dropped into the low 80's .... during those days the cooler was used for keeping drinks cold and it was opened often .... needless to say, we were going through a bunch of ice .... I found a local store with block ice and bought 3 blocks plus a 22 lb bag .... a few days later the crushed ice was pretty low but a good portion of the blocks remained .... the day before we left St Louis we bought more blocks and another big bag .... since then the day and night temps have been much lower and the cooler isn't opened anywhere near as often .... I'm happy to say that today we found a source for block ice .... there is no doubt that under the same circumstances, block ice last considerably longer than crushed .... the big advantage to us of crushed is using it as padding between bottles in the cooler .... with it mounted on the rear of the camper, it bounces a good bit .... transporting steaks on the way home we don't need as much padding so my plan is to fill the cooler with as many blocks as we can get into it and fill the space around the blocks with crushed ice .... it will be interesting to see how much additional ice we will need to purchase during the 12 days in August heat that it will take us to get homeJim

first two pictures, Yeti after exposed to road grime and weather over 7 months .... most recent trip from NC to SD and back covered over 4,000 miles
second two pictures, after being washed
lessons learned :
her lid seals so well that very little grime gets into the cooler
her exterior surface cleans up wellJim

Why did you refer to it as her? LOL
I noticed 2 guys were recovered in the Atlantic hanging on to their YETI.
Unfortunately not those 2 teenagers that were never heard from.2011 Jayco Eagle 351RLTS, MorRyde hitchpin

update : 5 days ago (Monday) in South Dakota we loaded $1,500 worth of steaks in our Yeti ... with that many, we could only add about 30 lbs of ice .... following the first day's drive we checked and found that the ice had settled and we could add another 10 lb bag ....since then we've been in days with 90+ degree temps and night temps in the 70's .... during the day it has been in full sun for most of the time and undergone heat radiating off of black asphalt .... today (Saturday) we checked again and added 40 pounds of ice .... I do know that with our prior large coolers, we often had to add 20 or more pounds a day .... we continue to be most impressed with its performanceJim

I would like to see a comparison between the Yeti and some of the copies. Just to see if it's worth twice as much. I know the Coleman Extreme is almost worthless. I bought 2 for our trip to Houston. They spent 5 days in a 70 deg hotel room and I had to add ice 1-2 times per day. Granted it was the hotel ice and not the hard frozen stuff BUT. They went back when we returned.Clif and Millie

UPDATE ....
our 160 qt Yeti Cooler shown throughout this thread is still very much in use .... as this is being typed we are in Grain Valley, MO on our way back home from South Dakota it is secured on the back of our Sportchassis .... we topped off the ice in it yesterday afternoon ..... the highest temp we've seen today has been 103 degrees, right now its down to 97 .... 24+ hours later we checked it and no ice needs to be added .... it is in the direct sun and is sitting on an aluminum floor that is too hot to touch for long .... fully understanding the conditions, it is still an exceptional coolerYou do not have permission to view this gallery.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was going to blame you.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
The things that come to those that wait will be the scraggly crappy junk left by those that got there first.

Our son works at the Walmart Corp Office in Bentonville, AR. A couple of years ago, they tested their brand cooler, side by side in identical conditions, versus a Yeti and the results were identical. .Bert
