If you follow TV show Mountain Men, Eustiss has a young guy working with him that made a knife on the last episode. It ain't easy. He had to get a kiln (or whatever it is called) to the exact right temp, quench the steel then beat it into a rough shape before finishing. I think it would take some practice to get a blade that would hold up to rough use. He used an antler of some sort for the handle and Eustis made the sheaf. They sold the knife to make some cash to buy some tin for a roof of a cabin they were putting up.

It’s been close to a year since I saw the show. They all are scrappers to say the least. They make do with what’s around. Don’t remember the names of all the different mountain men at this point but it was a good show.
