    Lee,
I believe it is illegal to mail a firearm--that is, one in firing condition, or even just the action. Has to be between FFL dealers.
And....I would not even want to THINK about what would happen if for some reason I was found to be in possession of a restricted/banned firearm in Canada without all the paperwork/blessings of the Canadian Prime Minister.
Altho I don't have that many years left, a life sentence would put a severe crimp in my beer consumption...

It just seemed fair to me if it was mailed to you by yourself it wouldn't matter.
Its going from state to state after all.
Maybe someone rents them up there. :dunno:
      But who knows, not me.

Certainly wouldn't want to cut into your brewski time.

Good to hear. We don't want your guns at our campsites. We are safer without them.

(I own rifles, shotguns & pistols, but they have no business being at a family campground)

no problem, that is something you need not worry about in any way whatsoever .... as stated, the vast majority of the time we don't travel with any type of fire arms (when we do it is usually due to a specific anticipation of using them during the trip) .... also, I completely respect any country's right to make such laws and I have no doubt not having us come to Canada is of no consequence

A private individual may send guns via UPS, or FEDEX. The regulations are here.
"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances there is a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air - however slight - lest we become unwitting victims of darkness."___Supreme Court Justice William Douglas

Fedex: Firearms. FedEx will only accept shipments of firearms when either the shipper or recipient is a licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, licensed dealer or licensed collector and is not prohibited from making such shipments by federal, state or local regulations when these conditions are met

UPS: Firearms will be transported only between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers and licensed collectors… to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer or licensed dealer for the sole purpose of repair or customizing, and the repaired firearm or a replacement firearm of the same kind or type on return from the licensed importer, licensed manufacturer or licensed dealer to that person.

USPS: A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. A nonlicensee may not transfer any firearm to a nonlicensed resident of another state.
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun
May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?
Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the state where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

If, after reading thru the info Ray posted, you still want to try shipping a firearm--go ahead. We promise to get you out of jail if it takes 20 years...

There is conflicting info on the USPS site, depends on how you read/interpret it. If you want to ship a gun of any kind, I suggest that you do it thru a FFL dealer only. Fedex and UPS are pretty plain on it.

                Boy, when information is wrong...

USA Residents/Citizens certainly CAN travel with firearms through Canada-- in fact, easier than a Canadian could travel in the USA with their firearms-- but you just have to go through the correct paperwork and process.

Firearms such as long-guns are easier for sure, but pistols are certainly possible. The truth behind this statement is slightly twisted. You can apply to bring handguns that fall within Canadian "restricted" classification but NOT "prohibited" ones.

                How?

Restricted firearms in Canada require a license. So, you'll need to come up here for a visit without the firearms and take the approved course. Once done, you apply for the license. It is the same one a Canadian applies for, but is issued to non-resident.

Once you've applied and been approved, you then apply for a tranport permit. This allows you to go from border to range, border to border, or border to home.

The last step is to contact the registration number for restricted firearms and register the make/model/serial number to your shiny new License number. You get another piece of paper for each restricted firearm showing it is registered, etc. Bring that, your transport authorization, and your license with you and have it readily available at all times.

(you can reverse the "registration" and "transport authorization" steps, if you want)

Please ensure that you follow the safe storage and transport requirements in Canada-- but you learned all about that on your course!

Finally, go grab your toys and bring them up/through.

Note: You need to contact the border in advance of your trip in order to notify them of your intention to travel with licensed firearm through the border. That is just a call with your license number and firearm model/serial number.

                Done.

Yes, it sucks a little. No, I've never done it because I'm a Canadian and have the licenses already.

Do I wish I could do the same thing and get permits for USA? You betcha, but Washington State only allows possession of firearms by residents (90 days living in USA/WA).

                <cry>

If you really want to do this, come on up here. I know a couple really great instructors that will help you through the process. Once you get the license, registration certificates, and authorization to transport... You have every right to the firearm in canada that canadians do!

                  Hey mirth,

I have my "Authorization to Transport Restricted or Prohibited Firearms" permit issued in Ontario. My understanding is that I can only use it in Ontario. Is that correct?
